Your body has its own intelligence, its own "brain," that I like to call the "body brain", always guiding you and helping you respond to the world around you. But in times of trauma or overwhelm, it’s natural to disconnect from the painful sensations in your body as a survival response. In the moment, numbing can be protective, but over time, it will distance you from joy, pleasure, and a sense of aliveness. For some, pain becomes the only sensation that feels accessible.
If you’ve ever felt disconnected from your body, you’re not alone. Many people come to somatic therapy searching for a way back in, when they realize how foreign this vessel called their body, that they are living in is. Rebuilding this connection takes time, patience, and practice. That’s why meditation, breathwork, and mindful awareness are so powerful—they help you listen, feel, and reconnect.
Here’s something I have learned in my practice: If tuning into your body seems difficult because you are habitually stuck in your mind, the best place to start is with your breath. Unlike other sensations, your breath is always in motion, making it easier to follow and feel.
That’s why I created BEGIN WITH BREATH—a class designed to gently guide you back into your body, starting with your breath. Many who join are amazed to discover muscles and movements involved in breathing that they never even noticed before.
As you cultivate awareness of these sensations, you begin to develop a deeper, more trusting relationship with your body. As you practice your breathing, you develop a capacity to command your emotional reactions as well, making those big overwhelming sensations and feelings you were trying to avoid, not so scary anymore.
Your body is your lifelong companion, the only one you will ever have. Its wisdom is always available to you—you just need to listen. And the simplest way to begin? Begin with Breath.
Are you ready?
